A New ROM for April (No Foolin’)!!
G’day, Beckerinos!
Did you catch the April 1st reveal of our latest, totally-100%-real, not-at-all-a-joke Mighty No. 9 latest playable ROM?
All April Foolin’ aside, we actually did get a brand-spanking new (non-joke) work-in-progress ROM from Inti Creates at the start of this month; here’s an update from director Koji Imaeda on how Inafune-san’s check went over, along with other assorted developments in development! Take it away, Koji!
NO. 5, FIT FOR FIGHTING? FINALLY!
Koji Imaeda: With this latest build of the game, we finally got a chance to try out an honest-to-goodness level! Of course the game will only get better from here on out, but for this stage in development (get it?) I’d say it’s looking pretty good already! What do you think? (You might need to squint a bit to see the screens :) )

With lots more stage details, enemies, and background graphics in place, it’s a big step up from the last playable version!
With lots more stage details, enemies, and background graphics in place, it’s a big step up from the last playable version!
Eyes glued to the screen, Inafune gives a thorough once-over to Beck’s movements, enemy animations, the background lighting, so on and so on.
He even got a chance to duke it out with Mighty No. 5 in a test boss room!
“What the--!”
“Dangit, he got me!”
Imaeda: The smiles among Inafune and the Inti Creates crew are proof that production is coming along nicely.
But Inafune didn’t call it a day after his play session, of course; from enemy placement to the UI, he gave the team feedback for various aspects of the game. He also made it a point to discuss how these features will affect player experience.
As the ROMs themselves flesh out more and more, Inafune’s ideas have been getting more concrete and covering a wider range of aspects. How will these impact Mighty No. 9, you say? Just what kind of game is this project evolving into, you ask? Even I can’t wait to see!!
ENEMY DESIGN SHOWCASE (WITH INAFKING BONUS)!
Imaeda: You’ve gotten a small peek at them in previous updates, but the grunt enemy robot designs are coming together nicely. This time around we’ve put a few of these designs on display just for you!

As you can see, the designs are getting nice and polished; make sure to check out the little sketches on the sides, too!
Our screw-type enemy. I expect you’ll see them all over the place!
And finally, our humanoid robot design...or it was, at any rate. When Inafune looked at this, he said “this isn’t gonna cut it!”, and started sketching his own take. His feedback, in a nutshell:
-
Even if it’s humanoid, it’s still a robot; the less human-like, the better.
-
Instead of holding a gun and shield in a pair of hands, let’s have the shield attach to its back...
-
When protecting itself, the body rotates around and the shield faces front.
-
The design should have functionality like this in mind.
Imaeda: So we took these ideas to Inti Creates and asked them to help edit the design...

...and voila! Our new humanoid robot design! The head, torso and legs are separate, letting parts swap out as needed. I bet there’ll be lots more variations on this design than we see here… my imagination’s running wild!
A SONG OF ICE AND FI—ER, WATER?
Imaeda: So last month we showed you art of a facility under darkness, but this time…

We take you underwater! Looks like some kind of water treatment plant, doesn’t it? I bet this stage will be pretty difficult to navigate. Plus, once you finally come up for air…

…the whole place is frozen over! You better believe the floor is slippery around here. Hmm… if it were me, I’d take on this kind of stage last… but I bet some of you out there would tackle this one first, huh?
So what’d you think of the enemy designs? How would you approach the ice stage? Let us know what you think here in the comments, back on the forums, on twitter, or our official Facebook page!
Until next time, Mighties! Same Beck-Time, Same Beck-Channel! (`_´)ゞ

MIGHTY NO. 9 COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT!
Do you like horror that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand straight up? Do you live for the blood-pumping terror only masterfully crafted horror games can deliver?
Back in the heyday of the horror genre, games relied on ambiance, oppressive atmosphere and an engrossing story to make you clench your sweaty palms around your controller. Even in the safety and comfort of your own home, all it took was a simple breeze rattling the windowsill to send shivers up your spine.
Fear not, Mighties--or maybe you should?--because those days are back!
The incredibly talented team of devs behind portable hits Dementium 1, Dementium 2 and Moon are are looking to take you back into the realm of the macabre with their new Kickstarter campaign, Cult County!
So what exactly is Cult County? Let’s hear it from the master horror-mongers themselves!
"Cult County is an all-new first-person survival horror game that blends the episodic story-telling of The Walking Dead with the classic tension-filled exploration and action of Silent Hill and Resident Evil, presenting an opportunity for fans to help a veteran team produce a new experience that is fresh, exciting, and scary!"
Check out their creepy new gameplay footage here, and head over to their Kickstarter page if we’ve piqued your interest. As always, donate if you like what you see!
